I liked tha 4. I loved the fact that they both secretly had crushes on each other, just that one was open to exploring his true desires and the other took a few years to come around. The second half of the book is the same except the guys have fallen in love and are having sex as they continue to make their escape. This book certainly speaks of “possible” and scary times ahead.
I even liked the cover without full faces on Matt and James. It is kind of telling that almost Half of my top ten is narrated by pm. This time the job is more personal because it’s someone he has history with Sooo you’ve got scrappy and resilient Matt who’s been tasked to extract his high school crush from a red state. Both are covert-ops trained military veterans, who have seen combat action. Great alt history premise, wrapped in bad plot. Task Force Iota 1. I think James empathic implant could have been an easy way for an author to skip some stages in their getting closer, but instead of solving problems of communication, it created additional doubts and longing.
And other small things like that. If James was so self sufficient, why did Matt even bother to save him? Plus I am not a fan of psychics in my fiction but I liked James in this instance. The different factions and the different divisions between the warring groups each had their own title and I often got confused as to who was being referred to throughout the course of the book.

It took me a little over 12 hours to read it eCover annf eCover. The balance between the world building and the relationship between Matt and James was perfect. The sci fi aspect of this story however is I found a bit lacking. James went to high school with Matt and things didn’t end well for them back then.
I also appreciated the fact that Matt has a physical disability with one of his legs teninno, but he handled it really well, and still was a good soldier.
