Speaking of Leonardo Da Vinci’s Mother: A Critique of Freud’s Notion of Identification

Wasserman, Ottino della Chiesa and others have pointed out that the measurements of both paintings are compatible with the altarpiece, and that it is an unlikely coincidence that Leonardo painted a picture that fitted the dimensions, at a time prior to the commission.
In line with this theory, it is hypothesised that the Louvre painting was sold in the late s, after some haggling over the final payment.

Unfortunately, we cannot be absolutely certain that this portrait of Lisa del Giocondo is the painting of the Louvre. Datedit states that Leonardo was working on a portrait of Lisa del Giocondo. The modelLisa del Giocondo  was a member of the Gherardini family of Florence and Tuscanyand the wife of wealthy Florentine silk merchant Francesco del Giocondo. Before that discovery, scholars had developed several alternative views as to the subject of the painting.
Some argued that Lisa del Giocondo was the subject of a different portrait, identifying at least four other paintings as the Mona Lisa referred to by Vasari. I never tire of looking at it. I have it around me all the time. You see it in Giacometti, you see it Auerbach now, this sort of energetic mass of forms.
