A lonely young girl living in a desolate forest is befriended by a young countess after what seems a chance encounter. Laura’s innocence prevents her from seeing the obvious, that her new friend Carmilla is a demon of the highest order, and one who has fallen passionately in love with her. Over time Carmilla’s lust for Laura and her soul overpower her caution, and the serenity of a life of seclusion becomes a nightmarish existence for Laura as her world unravels in ways that can never be repaired.

This is an archival quality presentation of the original unabridged story. Sheridan Le Fanu has been said to be the father of the English ghost story, and is arguably one of the most important writers in modern history. The story contained in this volume was a major source of inspiration for Bram Stoker, who later wrote Dracula. Carmilla our heroinewas the progenitor of the vampire romance movement.

Without Carmilla there would be no sensual or alluring vampires. Legend, and recorded history, had vampires to be foul creatures with horrid smells emanating from them, bloated bodies saturated with blood, and grotesque nails of sometimes extraordinary length.

Carmilla changed all of that, and she has the honor of being the earliest example of a vampire story in English literature. But to this day, unknown to most of the public, Carmilla still casts a long shadow, as all modern vampires owe her a great debt of gratitude, one she will extract one day.

Carmilla lives on, whispering her secrets in the occasional ear. It is from these whisperings that this volume was born. Would you like to tell us about a lower price? If you are a seller for this product, would you like to suggest updates through seller support? Carmilla is the story that created the modern day vampire. The House of White version is the only one to present the original unabridged tale the real story of Countess Carmilla Karnstein in its entirety with original illustrations, a glossary of Victorian terminology used by Le Fanu, and masterpieces of art that deepen one’s understanding of who Carmilla was instead of merely relying on a third-hand account of young girl’s jaded memory, twenty years lost in passing.

Carmilla was the vampire to break the mold of rotting flesh and foul stench. She was the very first romantic vampire, and after inspiring Bram Stoker’s Dracula, she has continued with us, always in the shadow, influencing culture with a subtlety that is as alluring as it is elitist. A multi-layered story of love, loss, and a yearning for both a past and a future unobtainable, and finally of great sacrifice. Carmilla ranks as one of the world’s great tragedies. Laura’s innocence and sheltered life prevents her from seeing the obvious, that her new friend Carmilla is a demon of the highest order, and one who has fallen passionately in love with her.

The tale of Carmilla is enchanting and hypnotic to this day. Best read late at night and alone, this story seduces you into a world far from everyday life, a world that extends no further than a day’s ride to the next village.

Having just seen the movie based on this book, I wanted to read it and thought this would be a perfect download. Unfortunately, the transition to Kindle is flawed. Paging back gives lots of blanks. Not entirely trusting of touch screens, I removed it from the Fire and loaded on my Kindle reader.

I sure wanted to see the artwork. After I first finished Carmilla, I almost felt a little let down, like something was missing. I went back though, and re-read the intro which was exquisitely and poignantly written and more deeply considered the beginning and fani quotes that bookend the story. With these things in mind I came to find the tale an exceedingly heartbreaking story. I wonder if Laura would have welcomed the friendship without the hocus pocus and deception.

I’d like to think, yes. Which makes it all the more sad. That deep friendship, which they both longed for, for different reasons, would have been magic enough to bind them I’d think. I can understand where Carmilla was coming from though. How many times have I myself, over the years I wish we’d descragar more of her side of things. One person found this helpful. First off, the book itself. It’s not the highest quality cover, but it’s kind of nice to find a copy of Carmilla that’s focused on the relationship between Laura and Carmilla.

Otherwise, I do love the front cover. Overall, this is a fine copy for anyone who already appreciates the story and the romantic undertone beneath the horror. It’s still very much sheriddan the horror genre, of course.

Carmilla by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu

I initially heard about this book because it was the protagonist in Robin McKinley’s “Sunshine”‘s favorite book. I didn’t even know it was a real book until I googled it, and that’s a shame. Carmilla really deserves to be better known in the classic vampire novel canon.

The vampire at the center of this novel has both the sexual allure of recent vampire novels and the threatening creepiness of more classical vampires. White knows his literature. What a great idea. Dusty White is reissuing works of classic literature with a forward explaining intricacies of the story and shedding light on points that today’s reader might miss. White also provides images that reflect subtleties in the characters. I found this choice a delight to read. First, the Victorian language enchants me.

It is elegant, delicate, polite in the extreme, a throwback to a time when fine manners and generous hospitality were marks of distinction for the upper crust. The precision of the word choice, the dancing around the main point with hints at the underlying meaning so as not to offend anyone, and the emphasis on great concern for others’ feelings transported me to a time and place where ladies and gentlemen handled their affairs with great deference.

Second, the front cover image was a perfect choice for this story. The innocent faces of the two girls who share a deep bond belie the shocking outcome of the story. This contrast reflects the plot. Third, as a professional writer, I enjoyed on many levels the delicacy of the relationship between Carmilla and Laura, the pacing of the story, the plot twists, the mood, the background, etc. Fourth, and most important, White has provided a vehicle for an easy way to spend some quality time with both familiar and unfamiliar literature of old.

You merely have to look for his Classic Literature Series and search for titles he has chosen as worthy of your time to read. He does all the work for you by plowing through stacks of possibilities and pulling out those works which he deems worthy of reissuing under his brand.

In our busy society, he is providing a valuable service. If he continues to reissue classic works in this manner, he has just created a loyal fan.

Patti Boeckman, Best Selling Author with over 2, book copies sold. Donald Rhodes did not participate in this review. Carmilla is one of the greatest vampire stories in english literature.

Le Fanu’s understanding of the lore and his own twists in the story have led to the modern interpretation of the vampire. It arrived quickly and exactly as shown. I really enjoyed this book, a well written novella! Takes the reader to the time and place of the story so well.
